Q: What year are you in school?
A: I actually graduated majoring in Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations, but I’m back here for grad school now.
Q: What made you become a bartender?
A: I needed to make that money. I decided to go back to school for another year, and I figured that if you’re a good enough bartender, you can make pretty good money. So I got a job bartending at Chucks, and I got another job recently at a new bar in Hays called Singers, which is right behind Gellas.
Q: What would you say is the most popular ordered drink?
A: Definitely Bud Light bottles.
Q: What’s the most expensive drink?
A: An actual drink would be the Incredible Hulk, which is Hypnotic and Hennessy. But if you were to go with a large drink, it would be a Fishbowl, which offers a variety of mixed drinks, usually a Long Island iced tea or a Caribou Lou or a Melon Ball.
Q: Can bartenders drink while they’re on the job?
A: Not really; we might have a drink or shot if someone buys it for us, but for the most part, no.
Q: What about discounts?
A: Nope. Well, I mean one of the other bartenders might buy us a drink, but we don’t get discounts.
Q: What are some advantages that come with bartending?
A: You get to meet a lot of people, and you make a lot of connections that you probably wouldn’t have otherwise made.
Q: Disadvantages?
A: Dealing with fights, trying to control a drunk person who is upset; it’s very hard to do because they won’t listen.
Q: Have you ever had to refuse service to anyone?
A: Yes, there was somebody laying on the stairs yelling for another shot. I thought that they probably didn’t need another one. I decided that I should give them a shot of water instead.
Q: Would you consider bartending a hobby?
A: I would definitely say it is. I mean, not only is it a hobby, but it’s something that I’ll always know how to do, especially if I ever need another job.
Q: Any other hobbies?
A: I still play baseball for Fort Hays and have been playing since I’ve been in college. I’ve been playing baseball since I was four, so I’ve been playing for 18 years. Also, my friend and I have created a new website, which is a social music network. It’s an interactive network where fans and musicians can go in and request other bands or themselves.
