With finals around the corner, some students are working hard to get those extra fun hours in before crunch time. Luckily, one organization is combining the fun of Friday nights with a great cause.
Each year, Big Brothers/Big Sister of Ellis County hosts the Bowling for Kids’ Sake event, where teams gather to raise money for the organization.
This year, one of those teams decided to go above and beyond bowling to host an event featuring live music, raffle prizes and the opportunity to help children. Starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday, the Golden Q will be full with the sounds of local music artists DOC and the Flatspin Band that will cater to multiple-genre requests. There will also be a special appearance by Dave and Kristi Gray.
Along with the live music, supporters will have the chance to purchase raffle tickets during the night to win several prizes, including a two-night Kansas City trip that features a stay at the Wolf Creek Lodge and two Kansas City Royals baseball tickets donated by Michelle Werth. The winner will also receive a television package donated by Walmart that includes a flatscreen television, Xbox and Kinect. The raffle will also feature other prizes donated by Carrico Implements and other businesses around Hays.
The event’s biggest sponsor is Eagle Communication, but the team also recruited Innovative Fitness and MMA from Kansas City to help with some of the larger prizes.
Kim Stoeklein is a member of the team and handled most of the details and prizes for the raffle.
Senior Megan Colson, member of the team, said she encourages those looking for a good time on Friday to take the time to help those in need.
“The benefit goes right back into our community,” Colson said. “So that’s a great incentive. Friday night is a night for fun, so why not go out, have some fun and listen to some live music for a really great cause?”
Tickets will be $10 in advance and $15 at the door the night of the benefit concert. Tickets beforehand can be picked up at the Golden Q and at the Hays Academy of Hair Design, or you can contact Stoeklein at 785-639-5004.
“Take advantage of the fact that you can get tickets before hand. That way, you can spend more money on raffle tickets and get some great prizes.”
