The first games of the inaugural season for the Fort Hays State University soccer teams both ended in wins for the new programs on Saturday. A ribbon cutting ceremoney commemerated the new stadium. The women prevailed over Newman University, while the men notched a win over Adams State College.
The Fort Hays women scored one goal in their shutout win over the Newman University Jets. Freshman Margaret Meier scored the team’s only goal in the 35th minute of the match. Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Grey had a perfect game with seven saves and no goals allowed.
The Tigers didn’t fare as well on their second game of the season, losing its first game of the season Monday by a 2-1 score against Nebraska-Kearney. The Tigers gave up two second-half goals to the Lopers. Sophomore forward Joanne Glynn scored the team’s only point of the game in the ninth minute off of a pass from junior Cindy Benitez.
The men’s team had to go to overtime to obtain its first victory. The Tigers were even with Adams State at the end of regulation. The deciding goal in the game came from junior Ricardo Yeverino with 22 seconds left in the 10-minute overtime. Freshman goalkeeper Ryan Pakieser recorded one save in the victory.
The men’s team also lost its second game of the season. The team dropped its first game of the season on Sunday to the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. The Tigers were shut out in the game. Pakieser played all 90 minutes and had eight saves. The loss puts the Tigers at 1-1 on the season.
The men’s team will travel to Northeastern State University on Friday, Newman University on Sunday and will host Doane College on Wednesday. The women will travel to Colorado Christian University on Friday and University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on Sunday.
