The Fort Hays State University softball team traveled to Denton, Texas this past weekend to participate in the 2012 Best Western Premier Spring Fling softball tournament.
The Tigers went 3-2 on the weekend, with a loss to the eight ranked team in the nation Angelo State.
In the first game of the weekend, the Tigers defeated Midwestern State 2-1. Midwestern State was ranked 20th in the preseason NFCA poll. The two runs for the Tigers were scored by junior Chelsey Rottinghaus and freshman Amanda Vaupel. Junior Maddie Holub was awarded with the victory.
In the second game of the weekend the Tigers fell to Tarleton State 8-0. The Tigers were only able to record four hits, and freshman Abby Morrison recorded the loss.
Following the loss to Tarleton State the Tigers lost to eighth ranked Angelo State 7-1. The Tigers were able to record six hits, but were only able to capitalize on one of them. Holub pitched all seven innings for the Tigers.
Following the two losses the Tigers were able to bounce back with two wins. Against Texas Women’s the Tigers won 7-1 with sophomore Kellsi Olsen leading the way with two runs. Junior Kaitlyn Shattleroe pitched all seven innings to get the win for the Tigers.
On Sunday the Tigers finished the weekend off with a 6-0 victory over St. Mary’s (Texas). The Tigers had six hits and scored six runs. Holub pitched all seven innings and received the win.
This weekend the Tigers will travel to Missouri Southern Crossover in Joplin, Mo.
