Last Tuesday night, March 8, Fort Hays State University welcomed Preston Pugmire to the Cody Commons stage. The night began with virgin drinks in margarita glasses with umbrellas and a bag of popcorn. The event was sponsored by University Activities Board.
Throughout the show, Pugmire performed a series of his own works, which were phenomenal. One of the songs he performed, “Porch Swing,” was written for his wife before they were even dating. It was his way of telling her that he even liked her; three years later, they got married and are still together.
Pugmire is currently on tour with his new album probably coming out in May. Preston records his voice and different ways of playing the guitar, then plays them back as his own band.
“I’m so excited for this album. I mean we have worked really hard. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did making it,” Pugmire said.
Pugmire captures his audiences by being very personable and hands-on. During his songs, he includes audience members, dancing in between people and being very interactive. His songs are catchy and deep. The real emotion he puts behind all the songs he writes and sings makes them irresistible and meaningful.
“I made the jump from construction worker to full-time musician, and it has been amazing,” Pugmire said. “I’ve actually been through the emotional and musical fire, so to speak, and have decided that this is where my heart is. A few months ago, I played a show, and afterward I got an email from someone who was there that said, ‘Thank you so much for coming and playing for us. Your music touched my heart and made me feel like all these worries in life I have are going to be okay.’ ”
Pugmire plays in hopes of inspiring and encouraging. Pugmire is touring to get his music out and supported. Funding started on Jan. 9. The goal by the end of the tour was $7,500. As of March 8, he reached $8,656.
“Preston enjoys what he does and doesn’t hold back,” said sophomore Vernon King, who introduced Pugmire. “He was amazing. I hope to be a performer just like him. He is such an inspiration; his music is awesome and I appreciated him coming.”
Pugmire has been performing and touring the country for the last four years. The last tour date is March 23 in Florida.
